New developments in the field of sustainable yarn

The Italian sewing thread manufacturer MIC has 3 new sustainable yarns in its range

Sustainability is not just a watchword when it comes to choosing what type of manufacturing plant or what materials to use in production. Clothing manufacturers are always on the lookout for environmental solutions when it comes to selecting materials to use in their textiles too.

The Italian sewing thread manufacturer MIC (Manifattura Italiana Cucirini), based in Vallese Tu Oppeano (VR), has been well known as a producer of all kinds of thread for clothing manufacture, weaving, label production and knitting for many years. Today, the company’s focus lies primarily in the production of yarn, manufactured not just at the company’s Italian headquarters but also in Tunisia, Romania and other countries.

With the products “Leaf”, “Bio Cotton” and “PET”, MIC has added three sewing threads to its portfolio that have been created with a focus on sustainability.

According to the manufacturer, “Leaf” is the first yarn made from a polymer that features enhanced biodegradable properties. The product is created from a polyamide manufactured by Rhodia Solvay under the trade name Amni Soul Eco. Additives introduced during production mean that, under anaerobic conditions, the thread is 100% biodegradable within the space of just a few years. The yarn has been certificated in accordance with Standard ASTM D5511 and is just as resistant, durable and colour-fast as any conventional sewing thread. Leaf is available in 6 different thread thicknesses, ranging from the finest size 120 thread through to a resilient size 18 thread. Other fabric and accessory manufacturers have also taken a long hard look at Amni Soul Eco yarn in the meantime, i.e. it will soon be possible to produce 100% biodegradable clothing – including zippers, woven labels or sewing thread – in the future.

“Bio Cotton” is an environment-friendly industrial yarn made of 100% organic cotton and certified in accordance with GOTS and ICEA standards. According to MIC, Bio Cotton was the first sewing cotton worldwide to achieve GOTS certification. The thread is available in three sizes: 25, 50 and 75 tckt.

“PET” is available in 3 different thicknesses, is made from recycled polyester and, like Leaf and Bio Cotton, meets OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100. Both PET and Leaf, mentioned above, are suitable for use in industrial denim and available in 450 different colours.

MIC is represented on the German market by the Link-Company, a sales agency run by Frank Strathmann.
